SCALING UP HIV PREVENTION INTERVENTIONS AMONG PEOPLE WHO INJECT DRUGS IN KAMPALA SLUMS

MAWDA is  Scaling up HIV prevention services among drug users specifically in Kawempe, Kampala Central and Rubaga slums. Different strategies such as, capacity building through training of PWIDs as peer educators in HIV prevention, behavioral Change Communication(BCC) strategy to ensure that people in the targeted three communities adopt less risk behaviors i.e. avoiding multiple concurrent sexual relationships, avoid needles and syringe sharing, consistent and correct use of condoms among others. PWIDs were also provided with condoms, HCT services, family planning and SRH education services. These services were provided through a referral system as well as peer to peer and outreach models. MAWDA is also working with existing structures such as PWIDs who are already living with HIV to provide ongoing counseling and testimonies during meetings and peer education and harm reduction sessions.
